Myanmar condemned ASEAN’s decision not to invite the leader of the military junta, General Min Aung Hlaing, to the virtual Summit (Summit) which took place today, Wednesday (26/10).

According to the military junta, the actions of the association of Southeast Asian countries are tantamount to denying Myanmar the same rights as other countries.

“Myanmar as an ASEAN member state has the full right to participate in the upcoming ASEAN Summit and related summits because the ASEAN Charter guarantees equality of all ASEAN members and thus an equal level of representation at ASEAN meetings with fellow member countries,” Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued by Myanmar. released shortly before the ASEAN Summit began.

Myanmar, which is now ruled by a military junta after a coup in February, insists that degrading its participation is tantamount to a violation of the ASEAN Charter.

Quoted The Straits TimesThe Myanmar Foreign Ministry confirmed that it would accept the participation of “heads of state or heads of government or ministerial representatives only.

Naypyidaw also said he would “pursue due process under the ASEAN Charter” to resolve differences.

The current chairman of ASEAN, Brunei, decided not to invite Min Aung Hlaing because some members opposed his presence.

The members considered Min Aung Hlaing unworthy of being invited because he did not show a commitment to implementing the five consensus agreed at the previous summit in Jakarta.

The consensus points include that violence in Myanmar must be stopped immediately, constructive dialogue to find a peaceful solution, and ASEAN will facilitate mediation.

In addition, the consensus also stated that ASEAN should be given access to distribute humanitarian aid to Myanmar through the AHA Center. In addition, ASEAN will also send special envoys to Myanmar.

However, according to the majority of ASEAN members, including Indonesia, Myanmar has not shown progress in fulfilling the five consensus points.
