Myanmar carries out first executions since 1990 | Abroad

Former MP Phyo Zeya Thaw and activist Ko Jimmy were sentenced to death for terrorism. “They will be hanged under penal procedures,” spokesman Zaw Min Tun said.

The junta in Myanmar has sentenced dozens of militants who took part in a coup d’état late last year to death. It was part of a crackdown on protests that followed the putsch, but Myanmar had not executed anyone for more than 30 years.

Phyo Zeya Thaw and Ko Jimmy were arrested in November and sentenced to death in January. “They wanted to appeal and also filed a request for the sentence to be commuted, but both applications were denied. There is nothing more to it now,” said the junta spokesperson.

A specific date for the executions has not yet been set.
