Myanmar: At 293 the dead from the floods – 2024-09-23 02:00:26

Myanmar is mourning the loss of 293 of its citizens, who died in the floods caused by Typhoon Yagi.

The first shipment of foreign aid has already arrived in the Southeast Asian country, following an unprecedented request from the military junta, which in the past has blocked the entry of aid from abroad.

Eighty-nine people are missing, 2,700,000 acres of rice fields and other crops were flooded and over 100,000 farm animals were lost.

Unprecedented floods

The typhoon caused floods and landslides of a scale unprecedented in decades in Asia. The dead in total have exceeded 600.

It initially hit the Philippines and southern China in the first days of September, where at least 24 people were killed and dozens injured.

It then claimed the lives of at least 588 people in four countries: Vietnam, the worst-hit state (299 dead), Myanmar (268), Thailand (20) and Laos (1 dead), according to data released by the authorities.

According to UN estimates, 630,000 people may need help after Yagi hits. Regime leader Min Aung Khlaig said he hoped order would be restored to the country “in six months”, the state-controlled Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported yesterday.
