Witnesses say soldiers separated the men from the women, after which the men were tied up and beaten. “They were beaten with stones and rifle butts. They were tortured all day,” said one man who managed to escape.
Women pleaded in vain to spare the lives of their loved ones. “They didn’t care. They asked, ‘Are these your husbands? Then you have to say goodbye now,'” says a woman who lost her brother, cousin and brother-in-law.

The Myanmar Witness organization received photos and videos from the villages after the attacks. It showed that some of the killed men had been placed in shallow mass graves.
There are also images of a murdered man in his sixties. He would not have fled because he thought he would be spared because of his age. Traces of torture can be seen on his body.
