Myanmar Army Car Hits Protesters, 5 People Killed

At least five people died after the car in which members of the security forces were traveling Myanmar rammed into crowds of anti-coup demonstrators in Yangon. A total of 15 other people were arrested in connection with the demonstration.

As local media reported, Myanmar Now and reported Reuters, Monday (12/6/2021), a number of eyewitnesses told Reuters that dozens of people were injured in the incident that occurred on Sunday (5/12) morning local time.

Photos and videos uploaded to social media show a vehicle crashing into a crowd of demonstrators and bodies lying in the middle of the road.

It was reported that the vehicle collision incident occurred minutes after an anti-coup rally was held in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city.

“I was hit and fell in front of a truck. A soldier beat me with his rifle, but I defended myself and pushed him back. Then he shot me straight away as I was running in a zigzag pattern. Luckily, I managed to escape,” said one protester who declined to be identified by telephone to Reuters.

Two other eyewitnesses said that a car carrying soldiers hit a crowd of people from behind. It also stated that the soldiers followed the running protesters, then arrested and beat them.

According to several eyewitnesses, a number of demonstrators suffered serious head injuries and were unconscious.
