Myanmar army accuses Aung San Suu Kyi of corruption

Myanmar military accuses political leader Aung San Suu Kyi of accepting illegal payments and gold. Other political leaders, including President Win Myint, are also said to have been guilty of corruption.

According to general and army spokesman Zaw Min Tun, Suu Kyi took over 500,000 euros. The information has been thoroughly checked and those involved have been questioned, he says. The general did not provide evidence for the charges.

It is the first time since the army seized power in the country in early February that the military rulers are making such sharp allegations. Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained in an unknown place for about five weeks. She was previously accused by the military of not abiding by the country’s corona rules, of sowing fear and of illegal possession of radio equipment.

Eight dead

Since then, there have been daily demonstrations, in which many young people participate. According to witnesses, eight more protesters were killed by the military today. In total, more than 60 people have died and about 2,000 people have been detained by security forces, activists say.

According to Amnesty International, the military is increasingly using violence against the protesters. The security forces use “war tactics” and deliberately target the activists, says the human rights organization.

‘Wrong assumptions’

General Zaw Min Tun believes that the international community should not be concerned with the unrest in Myanmar. The west would also make wrong assumptions. Security forces only use force when necessary, he said in a news conference today.

More than a thousand protesters were released yesterday, according to the military. The arrests would have been necessary because activists would have turned violent.
