My son’s flu is cured, but he has kidney failure

Jakarta

The Gambia is overshadowed by a mysterious case of acute kidney failure affecting children under five. This case is suspected to have originated from the use of liquid or syruped forms of drugs.

At first, The Gambia reported that dozens of children had died after taking the syrup, which has been linked to acute kidney failure. After being tracked down by the World Health Organization (WHO), it turned out that the drug made by India was contaminated with two dangerous substances.

Mariam Kuyateh’s baby, Musa, 20 months old, who was ill with the flu, experienced this. After meeting the doctor, Musa’s father bought a syrup to treat him.

“When we gave him the syrup, the flu stopped. However, this drug caused other problems,” Kuyateh said. BBCThursday (10/20/2022).

“My son cannot urinate,” she continued.

Seeing this, Musa was again taken to the hospital and given a blood test, which turned out not to be malaria. At that time, Musa received another treatment, but without success.

Musa was also put on a catheter, but the 20-month-old still couldn’t urinate. He also underwent surgery, but again there were no changes.

“He didn’t survive, he died,” Kuyateh said.

This incident was also experienced by another child, Aisha, who was only five months old at the time. Her mother, Mariam Sisawo, realized that the baby could not urinate after receiving the cough syrup.

During her initial hospital visit, 28-year-old Mariam was told that there was nothing wrong with her daughter’s bladder. Feeling insecure, Aisha was admitted to a hospital in Banjul, 36 kilometers from her home in Brikama.

However, after receiving treatment for five days, Aisha took her last breath.

“My daughter had a painful death. At one point, when the doctors wanted to put an IV, they couldn’t see her veins. Two other women and I in the same room had lost a child,” Mariam said.

“Aisha is the only daughter. My husband is very happy with his birth. And he still can’t accept it,” she concluded.
