My religious beliefs will not influence my Supreme Court decisions – VG

President Trump’s candidate for the Supreme Court Amy Coney Barrett said during the Senate hearing today that she would not let her religious beliefs influence her court decisions.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R) asked Barrett directly if she was able to put aside her strong religious beliefs as a judge.

– I can. I have done that in my time in The Seventh Circuit (the court she is a judge in now, editor’s note) (…) If I am approved by the Supreme Court, I will continue with it, she said according to CNN.

However, the Catholic mother of seven refused to comment on the American abortion decision from 1973, according to Reuters.

Coney Barrett was repeatedly asked by committee members from both sides, both from Graham and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D), but she would not comment on how she would vote if the controversial Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade would come up as a case again, according to Reuters and several other U.S. media.

Roe vs. The Wade question

Roe vs. Wade is serving a sentence from the US Supreme Court on January 22, 1973, which in practice legalizes abortion in the United States. If that decision is overturned, it will be a setback for women’s rights to decide over one’s own body.

A few weeks ago, President Trump was interviewed on the television program Fox & Friends and asked whether a Supreme Court composition with 6-3 in Republican favor would overthrow Roe vs. The Wade decision if the case came up, according to the BBC.

“It’s definitely possible,” Trump replied, adding:

– Maybe they want to do it in a different way. Maybe the judges would transfer the case to the states. You just do not know what can happen.

Unclear about Obamacare

This is day 2 of the Senate inquiry, which is due to be completed by the end of October, and Barrett may be elected to the Supreme Court by November 10, when they will decide the fate of President Barack Obama’s 2010 Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) which gives millions of Americans the right to medical treatment.

Several senators asked her, but Barrett refused to answer whether she would vote to repeal Obamacare.

– We cried together

Amy Coney Barrett was also asked the murder of George Floyd, who was killed by police in the city of Minneapolis this summer. She said the video showing the murder was personal to her and her family.

‘I have two black children. It was very, very personal for my family “, she said and continued:

– My 17-year-old daughter Vivian, who has been adopted from Haiti, everything that happened, it was very difficult for her. We cried together in my bedroom, Barrett said CNN.

Senator Feinstein also asked Barrett if President Trump has the political authority to postpone the election, which is scheduled for November 3 this year.

And she gave no clear answer to that.

– If that question would come, I would listen to the arguments, read the documents, consult with my advisers, discuss with my colleagues (…) We want them (judges editor’s note) to look at cases with an open mind, said she in the Senate hearing today.
