President Trump’s candidate for the Supreme Court Amy Coney Barrett said during the Senate hearing today that she would not let her religious beliefs influence her court decisions.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R) asked Barrett directly if she was able to put aside her strong religious beliefs as a judge.
– I can. I have done that in my time in The Seventh Circuit (the court she is a judge in now, editor’s note) (…) If I am approved by the Supreme Court, I will continue with it, she said according to CNN.
However, the Catholic mother of seven refused to comment on the American abortion decision from 1973, according to Reuters.
Coney Barrett was repeatedly asked by committee members from both sides, both from Graham and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D), but she would not comment on how she would vote if the controversial Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade would come up as a case again, according to Reuters and several other U.S. media.
Roe vs. The Wade question
Roe vs. Wade is serving a sentence from the US Supreme Court on January 22, 1973, which in practice legalizes abortion in the United States. If that decision is overturned, it will be a setback for women’s rights to decide over one’s own body.
