On March 7, the Lucerne population will vote on the 26 million loan for the expansion of the first stage of the cantonal road from Schüpfheim to Flühli and Sörenberg. The loan was accepted by the Lucerne Cantonal Council in autumn without a dissenting vote. Because the limit of 25 million francs has been exceeded, the population must also agree.
The road is very important for both tourism and commuter traffic, says Hans Lipp, Mayor of Flühli and Cantonal Council. “That is the lifeblood of our two towns.” Wendelin Emmenegger, local councilor in Schüpfheim and who grew up in Flühli, describes the street as very narrow and very winding, especially for agricultural vehicles, coaches and trucks. It almost takes an art maneuver for that. A renovation would bring significantly more safety, and not just for technical reasons. Because the road has often been hit by rockfalls up to now. It is planned, among other things, that the more than one hundred year old road, which was once expanded in 1956, should be wider. Thanks to a new, stretched bridge at the entrance of the gorge, the Chlusstaldentunnel is no longer necessary. The canton of Lucerne wants to expand the road by 2025 if the loan is yes. Sections 2 and 3 of the overall project are also included in the construction project for the cantonal roads – this will cost the canton CHF 74 million.
