What’s up with the Compass?
It’s been a long time since I filled out Kompasiana because now more time is taken up for new jobs and personal life. But this time I want to tell you about my experience during eye surgery which is one of the important moments in my life this year.

In the middle of this year, June 23, 2023, to be exact, I decided to have left eye surgery with a squint after waiting 30 years and when I was over 40 years old. It’s not an easy matter to decide to have eye surgery, but it turns out that after the age of 40 I started to feel tired of seeing with one eye with constant work in front of the computer and camera screen.

Squint at 12 years old

When I was born, my eyes were normal even until I was 12 years old. But changes started to occur when I took a photo for my elementary school diploma, there I noticed something was different with my left eyeball protruding to the side while my right eyeball was straight. At that time I was shocked and cried, my parents also realized that one of my eyeballs had changed. Finally I was immediately taken to a doctor who was then referred to an eye hospital in Bandung.

I underwent several examinations until finally at that time eye surgery could be done as long as there was a donor eye and of course it was not an easy matter to get it at that time. As a substitute for surgery, the doctor suggested I use glasses with minus 7 in the left eye and normal in the right eye. The doctor said it was done to cover my squint and because it was difficult at that time to find an ophthalmologist.

How come my eyes cross?

Squint or Strabismus summarized from several sources is a condition of eye abnormalities caused by a disturbance of misalignment of the two eyeballs due to shifting of the eye muscles. Until now, the exact cause is not known. Some sources say due to birth factors, hereditary factors or due to certain diseases.

Usually this squint is experienced by many children although it is also experienced by adults.

From what I have experienced, shifting of eyeballs occurs because since childhood I have had the habit of reading while sleeping with dim lighting (5 watt lamp) which then makes the eye muscles shift.
