She left behind four failed marriages and a long list of famous lovers to find happiness with Percy Gibson, 33 years her junior, but she was also traumatized. 88-year-old Joan Collins revealed details of her private life in the BBC’s full-length documentary “This is Joan Collins”. The “Dynasty” star takes viewers behind the scenes of his marriages, which were full of violence, betrayal, addiction and toxic relationships.
He raped on the first date and wanted to sell it to others
When Maxwell Reed invited her on her first date, Joan Collins saw it as a smile of fate. It was 1950, she was 17, he was 31.
London born Joan grew up in a home where everything was up to her father. He, too, became the first agent of the future star. A caring and caring mother shaped her desire to succeed, but – as the star reveals years later – there was something Joan did not like in her family. “Mum was trying to please my father all the time, and I hated it,” she recalls. “I swore to myself that I would not be dependent on a man for everything. I must have my own identity.”

Maxwell Reed – 14 years her senior – was one of the celebrities adored by teenagers at the time. She immediately accepted the invitation on a date. As the star reveals – Reed took her to his London apartment, gave her rum with Coke and a drug, and then handed over pornographic magazines.
“The next thing I realized was I was lying on the sofa and he raped me.”

Even so, Joan continued to see him and accepted his marriage proposal a few months later. “If I hadn’t been so innocent about sex and how it should have been, I wouldn’t have done it, but I had a strong sense of guilt and shame,” she says.
The marriage was not going well. Joan Collins’s career was gaining momentum, Reed was falling into oblivion. They were together for four years. When he tried to sell his wife to a wealthy Arab sheikh at an elegant London casino, the goblet of bitterness was overflowing. “He’ll pay you £ 10,000 for one night – and I can even watch it,” the star recalls. “I looked at my handsome, disgusting husband and started crying.”
When she filed for divorce, he demanded maintenance of £ 950 a month, claiming he had discovered her and made her career through him. Ultimately, the divorce cost her £ 7,500.
“It used to be said that women retired at 27, but here I am after seven decades in the industry. Now I tell everyone how to survive the dangers of this profession,” says the actress, referring to the movie “This is Joan Collins”. “Marilyn Monroe warned me about the Hollywood wolves,” adds Joan Collins.
