The late French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo had fans all over the world. They met the charismatic actor in person, or at least some Czechs wrote to each other. From the letters, the content of which Kateřina shared, for example, it is clear that he was closer to the Czech Republic than it might seem at first glance.
Kateřina shared her incredible story with the TV Nova staff, what the actor entrusted to her, viewers could see in Thursday’s episode of the show Life in the stars.
Kateřina Etrychová lived in Paris near the famous actor for some time. After returning to the Czech Republic, she missed the city so much that she decided to share it with someone. And she chose no one less than the famous actor Jean-Paul Belmond. “I didn’t send it with the idea that I might ever get an answer. I thought I wanted to write it and I’ll do it,” admitted Kateřina.
Her surprise was even greater when she really received the letter. The answer was a photo with a dedication and a response to a letter that Belmond liked writing. The couple began to correspond regularly. “I wrote in December, he wrote off in January,” she said.
The actor even began to confide in her about what was bothering him at the moment. She received reactions to events that shook France (such as terrorist attacks). Another thing that hit Belmond hard was the departure of his friends. He responded to this in a letter from 2020. “The year we’ve had has put me to the test, my lifelong friends like Jean-Pierre Marielle and Charles Gérard are leaving, and unfortunately others.” you despaired.
However, the letters also showed the deteriorating health of the actor, especially after the stroke. “Each letter was signed by his hand … it’s been quite shaking in recent years. It wasn’t the solid hand like in the beginning,” confided Kateřina.
He showed, for example, how much Belmond cared about his fans at film festivals, where, despite the effort associated with the disease, there was a feeling of harmony with the audience. And it wasn’t just for French viewers. Mr. Podolský longed to meet a smiling friend. He tried his luck and wrote a letter addressed directly to Belmond. In 2004, he found himself on the doorstep of the actor’s house in Paris and was terribly nervous. He was worried that the meeting would not take place. “He was sitting in the living room. He got up when I came … It’s hard to describe, it was very nice,” he told TV Nova.
Jean-Paul Belmondo last exhaled on September 6 at the age of 88. Thousands of French people said goodbye to him on Thursday in the famous Invalides in Paris. A day later, the coffin arrived at the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in central Paris, where a funeral service was held from about 11 a.m. The family decided that after the last farewell, the actor’s body would be cremated.
