“My days are numbered, but I am not afraid…”

The indefatigable Rod Stewart! At almost 80 years old – he will celebrate his 80th birthday next January – the British singer is continuing his residency in Las Vegas, before performing more shows in the United States and Europe next year. And he intends to continue for a few more years, even if he has no illusions about his health – he has beaten two cancers, one of the thyroid, the other of the prostate.

“I am aware that my days are numbered, but I am not afraid,” he confided in a recent interview with the English tabloid The Sun. We all have to come through at some point, so we’re all in this together. I’m going to enjoy my last few years as much as I can…”

And this eternal optimist sets the bar high since he hopes to live another fifteen years… To do this, he says he takes care of his health, with the help of a sports coach in particular. “I keep myself very, very fit,” he explains to the British daily. “We train three or four times a week… Sometimes, I take an anti-inflammatory if my knee is playing tricks on me, but very rarely. I don’t need pills!”

Drunken concerts

When it comes to alcohol, the rocker grandpa confesses to always having a bottle nearby. Before each concert at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, he drinks a little Bacardi rum, convinced that a drink is good for his voice. And once the last microphones are turned off, he doesn’t say no to partying. “You’re talking to Rod Stewart, my friend,” he reminds the journalist. “After each concert, we’re super excited. There are thirteen of us, including six women, very talented musicians. And we always have a drink…”

In moderation, however, because the artist knows his limits. “I’m not like I was in the 1970s or 1980s, where I could stay up all night, get drunk, go crazy and still have a beautiful voice. Today, I have to protect my voice before and after every concert. The older you get, the more you have to do that.” Which involves drinking large glasses of water, even if his bottle of Martini is never far away…

At nearly 80 years old, Sir Rod – he was knighted by Elizabeth II in 2016 – could take it easy and simply enjoy his old age… At the head of a fortune estimated at more than 300 million euros – he has just sold the rights to his catalogue to Sony for 100 million – he still lives happily alongside his wife Penny Lancaster, 53 – the singer is the father of eight children, from five different women.

But he’s not hanging up his boots: in September, he plans to go to a clinic to “get my blood cleaned,” so he can get a fresh start in Vegas—he’s signed until June 2025. And he wants to have a training track built at his Essex home. “I’m going to try to break the world record for the 100 meters, which is about 17 seconds for a 79-year-old. I’m crazy, right?”
