In the context of 80 years of liberation of Maastricht, MVV will play tonight in the match against FC Volendam with a special band around its arm. This band features the logo of the city of Maastricht and the original logo of the liberators: Old Hickory. Maastricht was officially liberated on 14 September 1944, the area where stadium De Geusselt is located could already call itself liberated on 13 September.
The wearing of a special band by an entire team, other than a black mourning band, is unique in Dutch football. MVV requested special permission from the KNVB for this, and received it. Incidentally, the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Maastricht will also be commemorated before the match.
