As reported AFPOn Wednesday (17/3/2021), since Sunday (14/3) local time, the junta declared martial law in Hlaing Tharyar and other cities, which put nearly two million people under the full control of military commanders. Many residents fled, while those who remained reported scenes resembling war conditions.
“There was continuous gunfire throughout the night and we couldn’t sleep,” one resident told AFP, adding that people are worried for fear of being targeted by the security forces.
A number of anti-coup protesters even camped on the bridge to the main city road, wearing protective helmets, gas masks and carrying homemade shields on Tuesday (16/3) evening local time. They also installed barricades made of tires, wood, sandbags and bamboo poles.
Several of the barricades caught fire, causing thick black smoke to rise above the now deserted streets. A number of protesters threw petrol bombs at the security forces while hiding behind homemade shields.
In another residential area of the city, a video recording verified by AFP indicates that the shots were fired non-stop for about 15 seconds.
The flow of information began to slow down due to the military junta restricting internet use since Monday (15/3) in the morning. Even every night, for 8 hours, internet access is totally dead.
According to a local monitoring group, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, more than 200 people were killed in the anti-coup rioting.
