Mutilated horses. A seriously injured mare in Côte-d’Or

A mare was discovered seriously injured in the chest area in the small village of Bagnot, in Côte-d’Or, we learned this Tuesday, September 15 from the gendarmes, an assault that is added to the series of mutilations of horses identified in recent months.

The injured animal could be treated by a veterinarian and his life is not in danger, the same source said, confirming information from the regional daily The Public Good.

The facts took place on Saturday, September 12 in a stud farm with around fifty residents.

The investigation was entrusted to the research brigade of the Beaune gendarmerie.

In early September, the owner of an equestrian center in Côte d’Or had reported an intrusion into his meadow, in Losnes, leading to the deployment of a large gendarmerie device.

The phenomenon is accelerating

More than 150 investigations were opened after these mutilations of equines, sometimes fatal, which took place in about twenty departments.

The first cases were brought to light at the end of 2018 in the Puy-de-Dôme with two mutilations six months apart in the same village.

The hypothesis of a series is only imposed in the spring. The Amiens prosecutor’s office was then seized after three horses or ponies were found dead in the Somme, their right ear cut out.

At the end of June, eleven similar facts are already enumerated across France. Since the beginning of August, the acceleration has been confirmed: Saône-et-Loire, Essonne, Jura, Côtes-d’Armor….

No track is ruled out

So far, only one owner, in Yonne, has said he has encountered two attackers who came to attack his ponies. A 50-year-old man, “known in Germany for assaulting animals”, was arrested in the Haut-Rhin before being released.

It is the Central Office for the Fight Against Attacks on the Environment and Public Health (OCLAESP) which coordinates the follow-up of investigations in order to analyze their elements.

Regarding the motivations of the authors, everything is considered: challenge on social networks, sectarian excesses, mimicry, hatred of equines, satanic rites …
