Mutia: Using Visual Arts to Promote Art Therapy in Indonesia

Jakarta

Mutia is very familiar with wayang characters. Not only through words, his father even told him stories through pictures. He recalled the nights of his childhood. Fairy tales are not the spoken words of his father, but the pictures that speak.

Through the writing of her father’s pen, little Mutia learned communication that goes beyond words. Her father’s drawings sharpened her imagination and encouraged creativity in Mutia’s mind. Until finally Mutia grew into a visual artist – she is a product designer and fine arts teacher for children.

“So my father likes to tell stories about the Pandavas, that’s how it is. About his days at the office, that’s why he can’t be called at that time. He doesn’t speak verbally. However, he actually tells the story through pictures,” recalled Mutia in the program Figure detikcom.

This story from her childhood led Mutia to become an art teacher. This is where he first met art therapy. According to him, the drawings of the students he trains contain the background that can be studied or the message he wants to convey.

“Well, there I actually saw children’s works. And it turned out that in these pictures there were several messages that perhaps we could pay more attention to. For example, there was sadness there, and then there were striking colors. Something “It’s like, the actual indicators are questions for me,” explained Mutia.

Mutia said, basically art therapy is the shape psychotherapy who use art as a medium for communication and expression. Art therapy can accommodate those who have difficulty expressing with words, such as children and people with disabilities psychological trauma heavy.

The media used for art therapy also vary. Not only pencils and paint, art therapy also uses tactile media such as clay, as well as digital media such as drawing applications on devices. Each media has its own function and purpose, depending on the needs of the user.

“For example, if you use a pencil, it might be more controlledthe picture is more detailed. So that’s what we usually use for assessments, to tell stories. For example, if we use paint or watercolorit is more fluid. So we usually use it for relaxation, it’s more like delving into yourself, more about feelings, like that. If clay itself is also more tactilemore sensory, Oh, I see. So that’s all materials “They have different functions,” said Mutia.

Mutia has focused on becoming an art therapist since 2012. With a master’s degree in Art Therapy at Lasalle College, Singapore, she also founded her own art therapy clinic, namely Art+i Art Therapy Jakarta on November 2 2016. Art+i Art Therapy focuses on providing evaluation, counseling and intervention services, especially art therapy, for individuals of all ages with various psychological needs.

Mutia is one of only six art therapist licensed in Indonesia. Until now, the field of art therapy in Indonesia is still relatively rare. As a result, many people still misunderstand this profession. So, Mutia has an additional task, namely to educate the public about the importance of art therapy.

“People still don’t understand art therapy It turns out it’s actually a serious profession and can help, can really help people who have mental health needs, that’s it. So finally, art therapist-art therapist “Right now the task is to educate the masses,” explained Mutia.

Mutia continues to promote education regarding art therapy. Through social media Art+i Art Therapy Jakarta, Mutia and her team are diligent in creating various educational content about art therapy.
