The competent services of the Attica Region are on high alert, after the confirmation of the first case of sheep and goat plague in a livestock unit in Aspropyrgos. By decision of the Regional Governor Nikos Hardalia, in consultation with the Ministries of Rural Development and Food and Interior, strict health protocols have been implemented to deal with the disease.
Immediate Measures and Actions
The veterinary services of the Attica Region carry out continuous checks on livestock units. In a broad meeting it was decided to upgrade the protection measures with the aim of eradicating the disease. Measures include immediate detection of any new cases, culling of diseased animals within 24 hours, and intensive monitoring with mobile units and targeted sampling.
Protective Zones and Restrictions
To limit the spread of the disease, 3 km protection zones and 10 km surveillance zones were established. The movement of animals for breeding, slaughter and grazing has been prohibited throughout Attica. In addition, three Local Disease Control Centers (LDCs) were set up, with all veterinarians in the Region on hand. Two additional laboratories have been brought in to process the samples faster.
Cooperation with the Livestock Breeders
The Region of Attica calls on breeders and feed traders to cooperate closely with the competent services for the immediate detection and declaration of possible cases. Farmers are entitled to compensation under the Community Directive, while rinderpest is not transmissible to humans, according to scientific data. Goat products (milk and meat) are safe for consumption as long as European regulations are followed.
