Mustaches and beards, the handbook for taking care of them (and choosing your own look)

by Federica Bandirali

In November, the month dedicated to prevention and men’s health, a guide with all the tips for growing a healthy and strong mustache. And you can take inspiration from the stars

Every year, with the arrival of November, the appointment with “Movember” is renewed, the global initiative created to raise public awareness on issues related to men’s health, in particular on the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of prostate cancer. The symbol of this project is the moustache: the name of the event is in fact a fusion between the English terms “moustache” and “November”. The men who join the initiative decide not to cut for the entire month of November. For all those who want to follow this project, Barberino’s, the Made in Italy barbershop chain, has shared a real guide entirely dedicated to mustaches: a small handbook with all the advice for taking care of them, keeping them tidy and choosing the look best suited to your style and face shape.

HOW TO GROW A MUSTACHE

Growing a mustache requires patience and attention. First of all, it is important to take care of your skin, washing it and keeping it hydrated daily and using an exfoliant once or twice a week, so as to eliminate any accumulations of oil, dirt and cells that could block the follicle and prevent the hair from growing. This can be combined with the use of Argan Oil, which helps nourish, fortify and make hair shinier from the early stages of growth.

CLEANING AND MOISTURIZING

Keeping your mustache clean and well hydrated is essential for their health and for them to grow healthy and strong. Food residues, dust and impurities can be found in the mustache, so it is important to wash it regularly. The advice of the Master Barbers is to do it two or three times a week using a specific shampoo, respectful of their PH (which is different from that of the hair) and formulated to clean without drying the underlying skin, like a nourishing and delicate shampoo. After washing, it is also useful to apply an oil or a moisturizing product, so as to keep the hair soft, prevent dryness and give shine.

HOW TO CHOOSE A MUSTACHE: PAY ATTENTION TO THE FACE

Whiskers can be defined according to three parameters: weight, i.e. density and thickness; direction, how far they extend from the end of the lips; and width, which indicates the space they occupy between the nose and mouth. «A heavy mustache is ideal for faces with prominent features, such as a large nose, while it risks becoming too prominent on a small face or with small features», explains Sergio Fenoaltea, master barber at Barberino’s. «A mustache that extends very horizontally, such as a handlebar one, is perfect for those with a long visage, because it helps to contrast and balance the vertical lines of the face, while it is less suitable for shorter and wider faces, such as square ones . The wide moustache, on the other hand, optically distances the mouth from the nose and is therefore suitable for those who want to shorten distances, but also for those with large eyes and full lips, because they help to proportion the central part of the face. In the end, more rounded faces or with soft shapes they will be enhanced by mustaches with clear shapes, while the more squared or angular ones by soft moustaches”.
