Must turn down account sharing

By more On occasion, Netflix has expressed its dissatisfaction with the fact that their customers are stretching the rules for account sharingand now the company warns that it will be even stricter.

The news comes just weeks after Netflix increased the subscription price in several markets – in Norway you are currently escaping – and means that if you share the account with someone who does not live in the same household as you, you will have to pay extra.

– Although these household subscriptions have been very popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. One result of this is that accounts are shared between households – which affects our ability to invest in good series and movies for our members, writes Chengyi Long, head of product innovation at Netflix, in a blog post.

Tested first

Initially, Netflix will test the solution by charging a fee for account sharers, so that nothing is rolled out immediately to all users.

Norwegians also escape the first round of testing, which will take place in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. Here, users will be offered to add an extra user outside their household in exchange for paying an extra amount. In Costa Rica, the amount is 2.99 dollars a month, which is equivalent to 26.60 kroner at today’s exchange rate.

Testers in these countries can add up to two users outside the household, and each user gets their own profile with personal recommendations, login and password.
