Please note, melanin is a pigment in the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) which can determine the original color of the skin. People with dark skin generally have more melanin than light skin tones.

On the other hand, skin color greatly influences our lives in determining many things. Starting from the selection of skin care products, make up, clothes, to hair color. In fact, it helps predict the risk of skin damage from sun exposure and skin cancer. For that, it is important for us to know the original color of the skin!

Here are five ways that you can do to find out the original color of your skin, including:

1. Observe the face when in the sun

Take a mirror and stand in the sun or near a brightly lit window. Then, observe your jawline, whether you see a difference in color on the border of your jawline and face. If so, the color in the jawline towards the neck is actually your natural skin tone. Meanwhile, the skin color of the face, usually has darkened due to sun exposure. This is why when choosing the color of concealer, foundation, and powder, it is advisable to wipe it from the face near the jaw to the neck.

2. See blood vessels (pulses)

You may have heard of this method before. Look at the bottom of your wrist, what color are your veins? If the color is purplish blue, it means you are in the cool category. Meanwhile, if it is green, it means that your undertone is warm or tends to be warm. If you’re not sure about the color and the veins look bluish-green, you’re a neutral.

3. Observe skin reactions when exposed to sunlight

Exposure to sunlight can actually be a way of knowing our real skin color. If your skin burns easily or turns red when exposed to the sun, it means you have a cool or light skin tone. On the other hand, dark skin tone and tan, usually the skin color looks a bit tan when basking in the sun.

4. Use white test

Take a plain white piece of paper or a white towel and place it next to your no-makeup face. Does your facial skin look pale or bright? If your facial skin tends not to glow, you are in the warm category. Conversely, if your facial skin looks radiant, then you are in the cool category.

If you can’t really see the difference, you’re a neutral. A hint that can be used is if your skin looks pale or yellowish, then you are in the warm group. If it is pink or reddish it means cool. Meanwhile, if you tend to be gray or grayish, you may belong to a neutral group.

5. Wear accessories

Pay attention to your skin when you wear jewelry. Owners of light or cool skin are usually more suited to using silver. Meanwhile, dark or tan skin looks fresher when wearing golden products.
