Mussels are disappearing – What is happening to the beloved seafood – 2024-09-07 08:22:33

The mussel farms of the Thermaic Gulf are being led to total destruction. The annihilation of mussels is unprecedented and concerns the entire Thermaic Gulf, with the consequence that there is nothing left in the cultures and that the brood has also been massively destroyed.

Mussel farmers are talking about a deep recession in the industry warning that there will be no production even next year.

The magnitude of the problem was established during the visit to the echelon area of the services of the Region of Central Macedonia, the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia – Thrace and the University of Athens, led by the Vice-Regional Governor of Thessaloniki, Kostas Iutikas and in the presence of Giorgos Kefalas and representatives of the Municipality of Delta and mussel farmers.

It should be noted that the vast majority of Greek mussel production takes place in the Thermaic Gulf (Thessaloniki, Imathia, Pieria). The produced product is of recognized high quality and 90% is exported to Italy, France and Spain.

The controls

The mussel farmers, who are asking for the support of the state, estimate that the cause of the total disaster is the high temperatures in the marine environment, due to this year’s prolonged heatwave.

However, the crew took samples of water and mussel flesh, which will be analyzed in the laboratory to identify the exact cause and to assess the situation as a whole.

The deputy regional governor of Thessaloniki underlined that all the co-competent bodies represented today in the expanded scale, will be in continuous cooperation in the next period, in order to assess and document with data the extent of the problem, but also to ensure the viability of the sector.

“We are all here together, declaring that we will work together in order to immediately compensate the mussel farmers. We intend to work and address the government in a coordinated way, because it is also absolutely necessary that there be special support measures for the sector in 2025, when there will be no production, combined with regulations that will allow the continuation of mussel farming in the Thermaic Gulf”, stressed Mr. . Utica.
