Musk promises “amnesty” for blocked Twitter accounts

Washington, DC Twitter owner Elon Musk has announced that he intends to reactivate all accounts banned by the short message service next week. He had previously asked users to vote on whether there should be a “general amnesty” for blocked accounts if they had not violated any laws or spread spam messages. A majority of participating users voted in favor of reactivation. “The people have spoken. The amnesty begins next week,” Musk wrote in a tweet on Thursday evening.

Such surveys are not representative. It is unclear whether and how many votes were cast by automated accounts. According to the latest information, the service has more than 230 million daily active users. When the survey ended on Thursday evening, more than 3.1 million votes had been received. More than 72 percent of them were in favor of unlocking blocked accounts.

Musk announced at the end of October that a council would be formed to deal with controversial content before Twitter accounts were reactivated. Last weekend, the tech billionaire then activated the account of former US President Donald Trump without a committee after a user survey. Trump had been banned from Twitter since January 2021. On January 6, he had expressed sympathy for his supporters who had stormed the seat of the US parliament.

The offensive tweets from January 6 are missing from the activated profile. Trump’s refuted claims about the presidential election allegedly being stolen from him by Joe Biden still have warning labels.

The Republican ex-president recently announced that he is running for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election – and can therefore make good use of a platform with a wide reach. So far, Trump has confirmed that he wants to stick with his in-house Twitter copy, Truth Social. There, Trump has just over four million subscribers. On Twitter, the profile “@realDonaldTrump” has more than 87 million Twitter users. However, no tweets have been sent from the account since it was activated.
