American billionaire and, according to Forbes, the second richest person in the world, Elon Musk is facing an investigation in Brazil on suspicion of obstructing the administration of justice. The opening of the investigation was announced by judge Alexandre de Moraes after Musk said that the X network could restore some profiles that had been deactivated by the Brazilian judiciary.
Judge de Moraes is leading the investigation into the cases of the so-called digital militias, which are groups of far-right supporters who, according to the authorities, spread disinformation and hatred on social networks, as well as the investigation into the January 8, 2022 attack on the headquarters of Brazil’s highest institutions by supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. While investigating these cases, the judge ordered the deactivation of a number of social media accounts, according to G1.
However, the owner of the X network, Musk, who presents himself as a supporter of freedom of speech on the Internet, does not like this. He described the efforts of the Brazilian authorities as “aggressive censorship” and the judge compared de Moraes to the negative character of Darth Vader from the Star Wars saga. “This judge has imposed heavy fines and is threatening to have our employees arrested and blocked from accessing X in Brazil,” Musk said.
The owner of the social network also announced that it is considering keeping the accounts blocked despite a request from the Brazilian judiciary to make them available again. He advised people to connect to X through a VPN network, which can bypass the justice ban.
De Moraes, who faces criticism even in his homeland, reacted sharply to the statements of the American billionaire de Moraes and threatened a fine of one hundred thousand reals per day (460 thousand crowns) for every renewed profile in violation of the court’s decision. According to him, it is impossible for social networks to be a “lawless territory”.
In addition, the judge ordered an investigation into Musk for obstruction of justice. According to de Moraes, his behavior also represents a clear violation of Brazilian sovereignty.
Musk has not yet responded to the judge’s latest statements. According to the AP, as of Monday night, the disputed profiles on the X network were still blocked, and Musk had not even released the requests sent to the network operator by a Brazilian judge, as he had previously promised.
