Musina Ebobissé had in fact been operating until then between Berlin and Paris. Its line-up brings together Olga Amelchenko au saxophone alto, Simon Chivallon au piano, Etienne Renard on double bass and Stéphane Adsuar on the drums. A group already united by the interpretation, on the Parisian stage, of the previous repertoire that Musina Ebobissé had recorded in Berlin with a team of local musicians.

If the two previous albums – “Timeprints” (Double Moon Records – 2019), “Engrams” (Jazzdor Series – 2023) – explored the theme of memory traces, marks of passing time, Musina Ebobissé focuses with “Abstract Narratives” to take listeners into stories without words, tales of sound. In this regard, he questions the capacity of instrumental jazz to be a vector of meaning, to express the contradictions of the time.

« I pay great attention to the search for forms in composition, the architecture of the pieces, their scenario, their unfolding, hence the idea of narration and the title of the album. »

If this third album is part of an aesthetic continuity in terms of writing and intentions, it is carried by a new team and therefore nourished by a new group sound. Finding the balance between written passages and improvisations, on the one hand, and interplay and solos, on the other, drives Musina Ebobissé. Dense and intricate written parts alternate with more sober passages which leave room for the expression of individualities: this is the case, for example, with the improvised double bass-drums introductions to the pieces Sketches Then Outsidersand the piano-double bass interlude which punctuates Eboshi Gozen. Influenced by the American and European modern and contemporary jazz scenes, Musina carries within him a dual energy.

« I am torn between the sinuous, the complex, the strange, and moments of rest, meditative spaces. I think in terms of moods. »

If there is a continuity that runs through Musina Ebobissé’s quintet work, it is her talent for counterpoint in writing for alto saxophone and tenor saxophone. “Abstract Narratives” translates in this regard ten years of collaboration between Musina Ebobissé on tenor and Olga Amelchenko on alto. Carried by the two saxophonists, the melodies circulate, responding to each other. Relief, depth of tone, role plays, contrasts, so many elements of superb dialogue.

“Abstract Narratives”, finally, is intended to be the expression of a relationship with the world and its complexity. Indirectly political, the titles of the pieces resonate with readings, films, plays, paintings, life experiences, sources of inspiration for Musina:

Eboshi Gozen is the name of a character in the animated film “Princess Mononoke” by Hayao Miyazaki, a woman who is both protector of her city and its inhabitants, and aggressor of the natural world around her.

Nassun and Essun are characters from the “Fractured Earth” trilogy by African-American author Nora K. Jemisin, on a planet with chaotic seasons and social systems of systemic oppression.

Gradetitle of a play written by the German FX Kroetz, denounces social injustice, through the story of a couple of workers – modest employees going on vacation in a social context which complicates them. Or the gap between the pressure of consumer society and the reality of their daily life.

The Fireside Angel refers to the context of the rise of fascism in which this painting painted by Max Ernst takes place.

If “Abstract Narratives” gives primacy to the imagination, it also reflects, indirectly, a concern for the times and the complexity of the world in which we live.
