Musik im Bergwerk: Underground Concerts Unite Different Music Styles

Concerts underground: a somewhat unusual combination. “Musik im Bergwerk” started on Sunday. A special concert series that brings different styles of music underground.

It’s supposed to be an “alternative to the outdoor pool” when various regional artists perform in the cool and dark mine shafts of the former Schauinsland mine near Freiburg. That’s the idea of the directors of the museum, who are trying to fill the underground passages with life. There are now concerts every Sunday afternoon in August
from rock, jazz, pop to classic at “Musik im Bergwerk”.

Summery fantasy worlds from musicals to opera

The Freiburg singer Claudia Mundi opened the concert series. With George Gershwin’s “Summertime” or “Youkali” by Kurt Weill, the program for the mine was intended to take viewers into summery fantasy worlds. Where most wooden instruments would have problems due to temperature and humidity, Claudia Mundi’s voice sounds clear and phrased through the pit.

“The acoustics are actually something very special here, because it’s very resonant, which means you don’t have to give that much energy and an incredible amount comes back.”

Concert experience with protective helmet and rain jacket

The concert experience in the mine is anything but ordinary: Everyone has to put on a hard hat before entering the pit. Through the dark corridors, in which the old equipment and rails can be seen, it goes about 20 meters into the mountain, in which a pit has been converted into a concert hall. It’s a constant ten degrees in the tunnel, no matter how warm or cold it is outside. It was rainy and damp on the first Sunday of the concert, which is why it kept dripping from the ceiling in the pit.

Music 100 meters under the earth’s crust

Musical treasures can now be found where silver and lead used to be mined. The contrast between the hard, rusty mine machinery and the soft music fascinates the organizer of the concert series in the mine, Karin Parensen.

“It’s cold and it’s a bit damp and it’s dark, but with the soft music, it’s just beautiful.”

SWR reporter Maya Rollberg reveals how the concert sounded:

Special atmosphere and acoustics

The refreshing ten degrees concert temperature did not dampen the enthusiasm of the guests. It was also a special experience for guests who stopped by spontaneously.

“We actually thought we’d do a guided tour, then it was a concert, but it was a cool atmosphere, great acoustics, and you don’t always experience a concert like that in the mine.”

Concert series with regional artists in August

Every Sunday in August there are different ones Concerts with rock, jazz, pop and classical music in the mine to experience.
