Musical producer Rick Engelkes must definitively repay 3.7 million euros in corona support from the Performing Arts Fund NL. The fund maintains that the vast majority of the 4.3 million euros in support for Engelkes’ production company was unjustified.
In April, the Performing Arts Fund had already said that it wanted the money back from Engelkes. He objected to this, but that did not change the opinion of the fund.
Engelkes received more than 4 million euros in support during corona time for a musical that he wanted to rig up about the life of Willem van Oranje. The performance had to be staged in Delft in due course, in a theater still to be built. Because the musical has not yet been created, the subsidy granted will be reduced by 3.7 million euros.
Employees already paid
After the first demand from the Fund in April, Engelkes said that the money has already paid employees who have done preliminary work for the production. He also said that he can justify all costs.
The production company and Engelkes themselves have not yet responded. The producer told Shownieuws at the end of May that he is “on the right side”, but that he will return the money if the Performing Arts Fund continues to demand it. “Then it must be,” he said.
