On the air – for once on Sunday evening, because of the final of the Eurovision songfestival on Saturday – 39-year-old Geertje Jorritsma talks about how she is still struggling with the consequences of a corona infection after two and a half years. As a result, she suffers from concentration problems and fatigue, with many consequences for her and her family. So she had to quit her job. “I have to rest a lot in a day, to be able to save the evening a bit,” says the mother of children aged 4, 6 and 8. “I can’t be the mother I used to be. Not to the zoo or the swimming pool.”
In order to still be able to enjoy the nice things in life, she started playing the guitar six months ago. She also sings, which gives Niels van der Laan and Jeroen Woe an idea after all the Eurovision violence of the past few days: with a good ‘creative team‘ around her, Jorritsma can probably become the successor of Mia and Dion. And beautiful ‘awareness‘ in the field of lung covid, because that is quite lacking.
The duo therefore takes on the role of Duncan Laurence and his partner Jordan Garfield – plus dog Conald, named after Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas – who will prepare Jorritsma à la Mia and Dion for a performance. When Jorritsma plays a part of her song about long covid, ‘Duncan Laurence’ hears it immediately. “Very good, but I feel like creative director together with my partner that this should be one and a half tone higher,” he says with a big nod to problems with the purity of the Eurovision song Burning daylight.
After that, 2.1 million people see – Until here is the most watched program of the evening – Jorritsma’s performance. She is ‘beamed’ into the studio, because really traveling to Hilversum is too much for her. Musically supported by the men of Rowwen Hezé and composer Miguel Wiels, Jorritsma sings her self-written song Do not leave me.
And that hits many viewers at home, it turns out. ‘As far as I’m concerned, this TV fragment can go straight into the Canon of Dutch television. How poignant and sublime to give a lung covid patient a stage with his own written song. Fantastically done, and … a lump in my throat!’ writes viewer Ron Magnée on Twitter. Pulmonary covid patient Ilse has also been deeply touched. “I’m crying on the couch right now.” Several people give Jorritsma ‘twelve points‘ to stay in Eurovision terms. Others write that they find it ‘unparalleled’, or a broadcast ‘to repeat every day’.

She sang beautifully. Let the Minister of Health see it as a serious incentive to conduct research into lung covid.’ Another viewer is also impressed. Deep respect for Geertje and her song about long covid. No matter how funny Niels and Jeroen made it through the parody (which was really hilarious, by the way!), they eventually treat the situation with respect and give her a stage. Really cool.’
The satirical show is with 2.1 million viewers the best watched TV program of Sunday and the best watched episode of this season. Van der Laan and Woe just fail to break their own viewing figure record. That is still on an episode from December 2021, which 2.3 million people watched. In that episode, celebrities were mocked for stealing the show during the Max Verstappen ceremony.
