Cologne/Mechernich – Music connects internationally in an emotional way. It can take listeners to distant lands or bring them back to themselves. The concert “Echoes Of The Moment” in the Luther Church Cologne on Sunday, November 10th, from 5 p.m. can do both, because the Persian improvisational music by the two London-based artists Pouyan Biglar and Ali Nourbakhsh is as temptingly wanderlust-inducing as it is spiritual.

As the organizers of “Blausalz Gourmet” in Mechernich say, the concert is intended to nurture the soul and provide some peace, quiet and a way to find oneself in our often hectic and stressful times. Just as the body needs food, the soul also needs to be cared for, say the Persian blue salt specialists. Improvisation in classical Persian music represents the highest level of mastery. Each performance is unique and is shaped by the mood and energy of both the artists and the audience. The Luther Church in Cologne’s Südstadt, Martin-Luther-Platz 4, is the ideal place for “Echoes Of The Moment” as a spiritual place and in terms of acoustics.

Pouyan Bigla is one of the best tar players of his generation and has studied with Iranian master musicians such as Daryoush Talaei and Mohamadreza Lotfi. His academic background includes a degree from Tehran Conservatory of Music and a Masters in Music from Tehran University. He is currently completing a Masters in Ethnomusicology at SOAS University in London. He won the Iranian House of Music’s Album of the Year award. Since moving to the UK he has worked with a number of orchestras including the Duisburg Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also sings and plays the setar.

Ali Nourbakhsh is trained as a daf and tonbak player in classical Iranian music. After moving to London, he expanded his skills on western drums, among other things, and also plays jazz. In addition to his teaching, Ali Nourbakhsh has founded a number of bands that perform at world-famous festivals and tour Europe and North America. As a session musician, he has worked on many projects, including scoring a BAFTA award-winning film and collaborating with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
