Acclaimed music producer Steve Albini has died, it reports American music magazine Pitchfork.

According to information to The Guardian, Albini suffered a heart attack in his studio and his life could not be saved.

Albini broke through as the frontman of the controversial rock band Big Black in the eighties, but switched to producing at the end of the decade.

In connection with producing Pixie’s debut album “Surfer Rosa” in 1988, he became a respected producer on the alternative rock scene in the USA.

Several iconic albums

In 1993, Albini produced Nirvana’s last album, “In Utero”. In the same year, he also received a lot of attention for his work with PJ Harvey’s record “Rid Of Me”.

His own band Shellac earlier this year recorded an album to be released next week, and the group planned a tour in conjunction with it.

Among those who have paid tribute to Albini is the actor Elijah Wood who writes on platforms X that Albini’s passing is “a heartbreaking loss of a legend”.

Steve Albini is survived by his wife, filmmaker Heather Whinna.
