Music – moving away from the classic carols – the main thing is singing – culture

Mannheim (dpa) – According to an expert, traditional Christmas carols are losing importance, but singing in general does not go out of fashion. “Pop songs replace classical songs,” the president of the Mannheim Academy of Music, Rudolf Meister, told the German news agency. At Christmas, for example, radio listeners can hear songs like “Driving Home for Christmas” (Chris Rea) and “Last Christmas” by Wham! flooded.

Master said singing is still very popular. “In the shower, in the car or in the many amateur choirs – people sing what they hear every day, what they know by heart because it’s in their ears,” explained the pianist, adding: “These are no longer the songs such as “A rose has sprung” or “Your little children are coming” with their religious background.

According to the university’s dean, Meister, singing is the foundational musical experience and is innate in all people; and the impulse to do so has not been interrupted in any society: only the content and type of singing have changed. As a child he sang Christmas carols under the Christmas tree and accompanied them on the piano. “Today we don’t even have a Christmas tree.”

According to the piano teacher, what one sings is not decisive for social development; it’s more about singing.
