Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
A group of armed men confessed Taliban attacked a wedding in Afghanistan to stop the music being played. At least three people died in this incident according to local authorities.
The Taliban government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said two of the three attackers had been arrested and denied that they were acting on behalf of the Taliban.
“Last night, at the wedding of Haji Malang Jan in the village of Shamspur Mar Ghundi in Nangarhar, three people who identified themselves as Taliban, entered the wedding and the music stopped playing,” he said. AFP, Saturday (30/10).
“As a result of the shooting, at least three people were killed and several others were injured,” he said.
Two people linked to the attack are said to have been arrested, while those who managed to escape are still being pursued.
“The arrested perpetrators of the incident, who used the name of Imarah Islam to commit their personal hostility, have been handed over to face Sharia law,” Mujahid said.
Qazi Mullah Adel, a spokesman for the Taliban governor in Nangarhar province, confirmed the incident but gave no details. A relative of the victim said Taliban fighters opened fire while music was playing.
Music was banned the last time the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the new government has not issued a decree stating it is still in effect, even though the Taliban leadership still considers it a violation of Islamic law.
“The youths were playing music in a separate room and three Taliban fighters came and opened fire on them. The wounds of the two were serious,” a witness told reporters.
The previous Taliban government, between 1996 and 2001, imposed very strict interpretations of Islamic law and imposed strict public punishments.
But since returning to power in mid-August, after toppling the US-backed government, the Taliban have begun seeking international recognition and trying to appear more moderate.
