Music – Ludwigshafen am Rhein – German State Philharmonic starts in the anniversary season – culture

Ludwigshafen (dpa / lrs) – This Friday (10:30 a.m.), the German State Philharmonic Orchestra Rhineland-Palatinate officially begins its 100th anniversary season with a school concert in Mother City. “We are making a big impact with the Festival Modern Times, which runs with four concerts in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen from September 6th to 20th,” said a spokeswoman in Ludwigshafen. The foundation of the orchestra is a musical meeting in Landau in 1919. Overall, the State Philharmonic celebrates its 100th anniversary with more than 100 concerts at almost 40 venues at home and abroad.

This year, the Festival Modern Times looks at works from the early 20th century, i.e. from the time the State Philharmonic was founded, from different perspectives. “We play, among other things, hits from the golden twenties, but also Charlie Chaplin’s” City Lights “from 1931,” said the spokeswoman for the orchestra. In addition there are symphonic heavyweights like Edgard Varèses “Amériques”, a composition for orchestra with drums and sirens. “There will also be a project with dancers.”

Not only music lovers should be curious about the parallels between the founding of the orchestra and the sound of the beginning of the 20th century and the present time. “If you replace technology with digitization, we are exactly at the same point as 100 years ago,” said the spokeswoman. Classical pieces such as Varèses “Amériques”, Erik Satie’s “Parade” or Igor Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” suddenly become a reality of life.

In addition to Ludwigshafen and Mannheim, the State Philharmonic Hall will also perform in Mainz, Kaiserslautern, Zweibrücken and Karlsruhe during the anniversary season. The orchestra, under the direction of Beat Fehlmann, has had the name since 2007. At the first Philharmonic concert on October 30, 2019 in the Pfalzbau in Ludwigshafen, Richard Strauss’ new chief conductor Michael Francis will conduct “Don Quixote”.
