The principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, Jakub Hrusa, will be the new musical director of the Royal Opera House in London. The 41-year-old Czech conductor will take office in September 2025, Britain’s premier opera house announced on Tuesday.

Hrusa has been principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra since September 2016. In London he succeeds Antonio Pappano, who retires at the end of the 2023/2024 season after 22 years. Hrusa will be the second Czech to hold the prestigious post after Rafael Kubelik (1914-1996).

Hrusa had previously conducted the performances of “Carmen” (2018) and “Lohengrin” (2022) at the Royal Opera House in London. Hrusa said she always dreamed of a long-term home commitment that set the highest standards. He loves London as a place to live and work and now he wants to make the city on the Thames his artistic home in the field of opera.

Hrusa began conducting in high school in his hometown of Brno. He studied at the Prague Academy of Music HAMU. In the fall of 2004 he made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic, of which he is currently the principal guest conductor.
