Eat. The Essen Philharmonie’s daycare project “Music is coming around the corner” will be an integral part of two study programs at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and the University of Cologne.

The Folkwang University of the Arts will include the project in the “Elementary Music Education” course. Professor Andreas Jacob, Rector of Folkwang University, sees opportunities in this: “I am very pleased that we can launch the cooperation with the Philharmonie Essen today. For our students, the collaboration is another opportunity to practically apply the knowledge they have learned during their studies and thus get many children interested in classical music at an early age.”

As part of a practical seminar that is mandatory for students, the music students will go to the Blauer Elefant children’s and family center in Altenessen for the first time in the 2024/2025 winter semester. This facility becomes a training daycare center. Together with the students, the children experience classical music and get to know various orchestral instruments, which they can then even try out for themselves. For the first time, the project also addresses children under the age of three.

Marie Babette Kidney, director of the Essen Philharmonic, emphasizes the importance of the project: “Our goal as the Essen Philharmonic is to have an impact on the entire city and also to reach people musically who have not yet come into contact with music or the Philharmonic . The “Music is coming around the corner” project enables children in neighborhoods in particular need of renewal to make music, sing and try out artistic skills themselves and also come into direct contact with musicians. This inspiration has a lasting effect and also radiates out into the children’s environment.”

To kick off this new cooperation, Marie Babette kidneys (director of the Philharmonie Essen), Merja Dworczak (head of education, Philharmonie Essen), Professor Anne Steinbach (music education/music didactics, Folkwang University of the Arts), Professor Andreas Jacob (rector of the Folkwang University of the Arts) and Muchtar Al Ghusain (Head of Youth, Culture and Education Division of the City of Essen).

The Essen Philharmonic launched the “Music comes around the corner” project in the 2014/2015 season. Since the 2023/2024 season, she has been cooperating with the Essen Youth Welfare Office and giving children from districts particularly affected by child poverty their first experiences with classical music. “Music is coming around the corner” deliberately targets kindergarten children from the age of three, as many daycare centers do not have any musical offerings. The project is funded by the Alfred Krupp and Friedrich Alfred Krupp Foundation. The foundation decided to continue funding for 2025.
