Music – Freiburg im Breisgau – University of Music: applicant audition with remote controlled piano – culture

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – For the first time, the University of Music in Freiburg is holding an entrance exam today, in which applicants from abroad can play using the remote-controlled piano. In front of a jury, three pianists in Tokyo and Shanghai are allowed to take their entrance examination on a so-called reproduction piano, as the university announced. The first audition comes from China with a piece by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The complex movement of the keys is transmitted to a piano in Freiburg via the Internet. At the same time there is a video transmission. The reason for the extraordinary entrance examination is the corona crisis, said a spokesman. The travel restrictions currently make it difficult for international applicants to travel. Therefore, in addition to a video application, they also offered this more complex live game.

The Disklavier – so the brand name – offers up to 1024 possibilities of how hard the hammer can hit the side in the piano. Such high-resolution precision allows artistic differentiation to be captured in the best possible way. It is still unclear whether this option of audition for international applicants will remain after the corona pandemic.
