Music – Dresden – Neuer Kreuzkantor signs service contract in Dresden – Culture

Dresden (dpa / sn) – The future cantor of the Dresden Kreuzchor, Martin Lehmann, signed his service contract with the city of Dresden on Thursday. The city announced that Lehmann should take office on September 1, 2022. The public introduction to the office of Kreuzkantor will take place on September 25, 2022. As part of a preparatory contract, however, he will prepare the school year and the concert season 2022/23 intensively from January 2022 to August 2022.

As a pupil, Lehmann was himself a Crucian. The 48-year-old will succeed Roderich Kreile as the 29th cantor, who will retire in July 2022 after 25 years. The city council approved the replacement at its last meeting on December 16.

“I look forward to my work as Kreuzkantor with great enthusiasm and inner humility,” said Lehmann, according to the city’s announcement. His goal will be “to strengthen the Dresden Kreuzchor and its luminosity as the oldest cultural institution in the state capital of Dresden in the post-Corona phase, pedagogically, musically, structurally and in terms of content”.

The Dresden Kreuzchor, founded in 1216, is one of the most renowned boys’ choirs in Germany and is an institution of the city of Dresden. It has up to 140 singers between the ages of 9 and 19. The ensemble primarily organizes Vespers, church services and musical life in the Dresden Kreuzkirche, the repertoire ranges from early baroque to world premieres of contemporary music. In addition, there are sound recordings, appearances with the Dresden Philharmonic and the Saxon State Orchestra as well as tours at home and abroad – also as an ambassador for the city.
