The patient wait was worth it: US pop singer Madonna thrilled her fans at a performance in Cologne. “Absolutely fantastic”, “It was an experience” – it was said on social media on Thursday night after Madonna’s first German concert of her world tour “The Celebration Tour”. Around 16,000 fans celebrated the pop star on Wednesday evening in the almost sold-out Lanxess Arena in Cologne.
In the almost two and a half hour show, Madonna presented many of her big hits. You could hear “Like A Prayer”, “Vogue” and the song “Holiday”, with which she achieved her international breakthrough in 1983. Many videos of her spectacular performance were then shared on social networks.
With her “The Celebration Tour”, the American pop icon is celebrating two anniversaries: her 65th birthday and the first 40 years of a successful career in which Madonna developed into a global pop music star.
Her spectacular appearance in Köln was characterized by a visually powerful stage show, numerous dance performances and revealing costumes. Her daughter Mercy James also made an appearance on the show: she accompanied her mother on the piano during “Bad Girl”.
At first, however, Madonna challenged her fans’ patience. The show didn’t start until around 10 p.m., an hour and a half later than announced.
Madonna has been traveling through Europe with her world tour “The Celebration Tour” since mid-October. In addition to a second appearance in Cologne on Thursday evening, two more Germany concerts were to follow on November 28th and 29th in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. The 65-year-old had to postpone the start of her tour in Canada, which was actually planned for the summer, due to a serious bacterial infection.
In the context of the Cologne concert, the warning strike by the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) on Wednesday evening caused difficulties for visitors who had arrived by train to travel home at night.
