Leipzig (dpa) – The Leipzig Bach Archive has acquired the complete edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, which was once owned by the conductor and composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). The 59 volumes are provided with numerous handwritten annotations by Mahler, as the Bach Archive announced on Monday. With the purchase, the edition will return to Bach’s main place of action and can be presented there to a broad audience, said Prof. Markus Hilgert, Secretary General of the Kulturstiftung der Länder. This funded the purchase with 15,000 euros.
Gustav Mahler, born in Bohemia, is one of the most important composers and conductors of his time. He worked as Kapellmeister in Leipzig from July 1886 to May 1888. Numerous documents and reports from contemporary witnesses attest to his admiration for Bach’s works.
