You will have to work hard to get to the Top 15
This year “Music Bank” will be held for the 24th time. Last year, the group “Citi zēni” with the song “Lieka stuka” was the winner, the song “Laternas” performed by the group “Sudden Lights” became the second most valuable, while the third place was taken by “The Sound Poets” with “Pie vienas uņu”. Excluding the “sound poets”, the rest of the winners have reached the Top 25 this year as well, and in addition, the dauzonous “Citi boys” have done something very cunning – in one song they have teamed up with the forefathers of Latvian fun music from the group “Lůvųligais tipis”, but at the same time, for the sake of safety, they have delegated their own ( Dagni Roziņu) for a joint song with Darta Stepanov. “Sudden Lights” have been on a roll this year, so their presence in the Top 25 is not surprising at all.
Historically, the trio Dons (four victories, of which three in a row), “Prāta vetra” (even five victories, but two in collaboration with “Musiqq” and “Tautumeitāt”) and Intars Busulis (three), and they also entered the Top 25 of this year’s survey. Moreover, with good chances, as Busulis fans can thoroughly blow into his magic flute, and Don can take his broken spear to the kingdom, and “smart people” can dance to the queen’s waltz. Other usual “Music Bank” favorites (Aija Andrejeva, “Triana Parks”, “Astro’n’out”, “Iron Wolf”, “Singapore Satin”, etc.) have also qualified for the final vote, so it can be concluded that just by being in the Top 15, a fierce battle is expected, but further will be even more interesting.
This time, the most valuable will be determined by the most maniacal voters
Until January 15, the 25 final songs of “Music Bank” will be judged by listeners and experts, and on January 16, the 15 songs and their performers who will fight for the title of the most valuable song of the year will be announced. For the first time in the history of the poll, the winner among the final songs will be determined solely by the votes of the listeners and viewers during the live broadcast of the ceremony on January 27, shortly after 9 p.m., on Latvijas Radio 2 and LTV1 live from the Daugavpils Olympic Center. It’s a bit strange, because earlier in the evaluation, the jury also carried its burden, which this time ends its mission with the determination of the Top 15, but this calls into question the laurels of the winner as the performer of the most valuable song. Knowing how maniacal voters live in Latgale, there are reasonable concerns that those present at the event can vote at incredible heights, for example, the group “Latgalīšu reps” with the nerve-wracking influencer Felipi Gabrielu as a bonus.
Until January 15, everyone can vote for their chosen composition once a day on the survey website. The songs of the final vote of “Muzikālās bankas” are also judged by the jury, which consists of composer Zigmars Liepiņš, composer and arranger Kristaps Krievkalns, opera singer Raimonds Bramanis, conductor Aigars Meri, DJ and Latvian Radio 5 music editor Uldis Cīrulis (DJ Monsta), trombonist and Latvian Radio big band member Uldis Ziediņš, singer Elza Rozentāle, conductor and singer Laura Leontjeva, music journalist Uldis Rudaks, as well as musicologist and LTV Kulturas editorial director Ieva Rozentāle.
Heiress of “Microphone”, only without sending letters
“Muzikālā banka” can be partially evaluated as the direct heir of the once most prestigious song survey “Mikrofons”. It is broadcast on Latvian Radio 2 three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Throughout the year, listeners vote on the website to determine the most valuable songs of the week, month and year, with the Top 25 being the best of these individual votes.
Traditionally, the annual survey of the “Music Bank” ends with an ambitious award ceremony in which the authors and performers of the songs whose works have been rated the highest by the audience and the jury take part. “A total of 150 songs have been included in the survey of the 2023 season of “Music Bank”. This season, the survey includes both well-known artists and new names, as well as musicians who had been silent for some time and are now ready to contribute to the development of pop music in Latvia. Not only the musicians themselves, but also the listeners were active, getting involved in creating the charts and tirelessly voting for their favorites,” says Kaspars Mauriņš, director of Latvian Radio 2.
