Young men and women in the Gaza Strip are increasingly interested in learning music by joining specialized courses in music centers with the aim of developing their talents and adding an artistic space that helps them renew and relieve the pressures of difficult life inside the Strip.
The love of playing the Oud instrument is the common denominator of young men and women in Gaza. They are in a center to learn music through a specialized free course, in which they found an opportunity to develop their musical talents and release the pressures of life they suffer from, as they say.
Asala Kallab, who is trained to play the oud instrument, spoke to us about this passion, saying, “I study music as food for the soul, which opens the way for us to escape from the bitter reality to the world we love. I noticed in myself, during a short period of time, a great and rapid development during which I was able to play the maqam.” Al-Ajam and Al-Bayati, and the matter did not stop there.
Hamza Al-Aloul, who is also trained to play the oud instrument, added, “In view of the bad conditions we live in, music allows us to enjoy and entertain ourselves, and since I love the oud instrument, I decided to learn to play it.”
In the Gaza branch of the Greek Delia Foundation for the Arts, a non-profit organization that seeks to develop the music sector in marginalized and disadvantaged communities, Raouf Al-Bilbesi begins to train them in the skills of listening to the oud instrument.
Al-Balbeisi explains the matter, saying: “In the beginning, we learn acoustic playing away from the notes, and after six months they can take the notes, and then we reach the stage of playing any song that is heard normally, and this matter would be a refuge to remove negative energy in light of the difficult living restrictions.” In Gaza, it is therefore an artistic space that seeks a world in which young people create a better future through music.
Enabling young women to hone their musical talents and giving them an audible voice and equal opportunities to market their creativity, would enable them in the future to employ music in their daily lives and careers and face the difficult reality in a besieged sector.”
