Museumplein Amsterdam risk area, police may search during demonstrations

In Amsterdam, the Museumplein and its surroundings have been designated as a safety risk area for today and tomorrow. This means that the police may carry out preventive searches.

Several demonstrations have been reported in the capital this weekend, but the authorities suspect that unannounced protests are also being held on Museumplein. “These are not allowed. The police will intervene if necessary,” the municipality said.

Previous unannounced protests detained people with weapons. Authorities think guns will be taken again this weekend.

In recent months things got out of hand on Museumplein several times with prohibited actions against the corona measures and cabinet policy. Dozens of people were arrested in the process.

Other demonstrations

A Kurdish demonstration is planned for today in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam, in the context of newroz, the Kurdish New Year.

Tomorrow there will be a demonstration in the Arenapark against mayor Halsema and protests against racism in the Westerpark. Due to the corona rules, a maximum of 500 participants are welcome at the demonstrations.
