A serious incident this week affected the headquarters of the Forest Park of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Chile. As reported by the institution itself on its social networks, it was an attack on some of its exhibitions, which occurred on Tuesday 21, which forced the temporary closure of the second floor of the venue.
In the last hours, the MAC representatives provided more details of what happened and the affected works, while confirming that the incident is being investigated by the courts.
“Regarding the events that occurred on Tuesday, December 21, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Chile reports that it was a situation of vandalization and theft that affected to different degrees four exhibitions at its headquarters in Parque Forestal”, they explain from the museum.
“According to the degree of damage, the exhibits affected were You almost, you almost loved me. Countermemoriesby Claudia Lee; Leaking Women: Women Holding the Roofby Paula Salas and Soledad Pinto; Liquid Solid Surface by Alejandro Leonhardt; and a work from the Biennial of Media Arts: Umbral, specifically that of Andrés Denegri ”, they add from the institution.
In addition, it is explained that “both the artists and curators, managers and collections involved were informed as soon as the events occurred, after which they were able to verify the levels of damage in the room.”
Regarding the legal actions initiated by the museum, “together with making a report on the state of the condition, the MAC filed a complaint with the First Police Station of Santiago, who on the night of December 21 made the first expert opinion that will accompany the beginning of the case in the prosecution ”.
“So far a person linked to the events has been identified and during the afternoon of December 22, the museum received, from a direct relative, part of the stolen pieces,” they detail.
Finally, the director of the museum, Daniel Cruz, pointed out that after what happened “he has received various expressions of support from artistic and museum institutions”, which for them means “that we are facing a symptomatic event that involves us all. We could say that what happened at the MAC happens to the arts sector in general, in a context of social fragility that puts us new challenges to face with creativity and determination, ”he explained.
