LH Mikl-Leitner: “Sport has many beautiful, sad and particularly emotional stories to tell”
St. Pölten (OTS / NLK) – On March 13th, the Museum Niederösterreich opens the gates for the special exhibition “I wer’narrisch! The Century of Sports ”in the House of History. Provincial governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner informed today about the exhibition together with Museum Niederösterreich managing director Matthias Pacher and Christian Rapp, the scientific director of the House of History.
“’I wer’narrisch’, a saying that each of us has already said at least once,” Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner opened the press conference – and said that this sentence may have been uttered more often in the past year in view of the pandemic. “It was June 21, 1978 when Austria defeated Germany 3-2 at the World Cup in Argentina and Edi Finger sen. gave free rein to his emotions as a commentator ”, said Mikl-Leitner, who pointed out that this“ saying has not lost its popularity to this day, and that is why the title of this special exhibition on the century of sport could not have been chosen more appropriately.
Just like those at previous exhibitions such as “The Contested Republic – Austria from 1918 to 1938” or “The Young Hitler. Formative years of a dictator. 1889-1914 ”, the special exhibition“ will definitely get a lot of attention from tomorrow. ”On 650 square meters of exhibition space with 243 national and international objects and seven interactive stations – in cooperation with Sportland Lower Austria – the whole family will be able to visit the Dive deeper into the world of sports. “Sport,” said the governor, “has had many beautiful, sad and particularly emotional stories to tell over the past 100 years.” She recalled the latest successes at the World Ski Championships and the Nordic World Championships, or the highlights of Tennis player Dominic Thiem. “100 years of sporting history also mean a development from elitist leisure time to mass sport, overcoming performance limits with technology, performance enhancement, but also doping, inclusion and exclusion in sport as well as impressive stages or the ideological seductiveness of sport,” said Mikl-Leitner. For a successful exhibition, however, you also need authentic and successful ambassadors, who have made themselves available with the former ski racer Michaela Dorfmeister and para-swimmer Andreas Onea.
Mikl-Leitner also pointed out that the cultural sector is in a very challenging time and that leisure time enjoyment is only possible to a limited extent. “It is the museums that offer the chance and opportunity to make culture tangible,” emphasized the governor, who pointed out that museums in particular offer an ideal leisure experience and allow cultural enjoyment to come true at a high level.
Museum-NÖ Managing Director Matthias Pacher added that it is “an exhibition that promises a lot and keeps a lot.” He also pointed out that the exhibition would be open until January 2022, giving visitors enough time to visit the special show can. Christian Rapp, the scientific director of the House of History, emphasized: “The exhibition turned out to be a nice mixture. An exhibition that seduces, but also points out the sore points of the sport. ”Among other things, the Olympic gold medal from Franz Klammer, a bicycle from Roland Königshofer and the medicine case from Alfred Kain can be seen. “We show the exciting development of sport from an elitist leisure time enjoyment through increased leisure time and new media to a mass phenomenon. At the same time, we deliberately address critical issues such as the political abuse of sport, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism and doping. “
The special exhibition in the House of History in the Museum Niederösterreich is open from March 13, 2021 to January 9, 2022. Further information: Museum Lower Austria, Mag.Florian Müller, Public Relations and Communication, Tel .: 066460499911, E-Mail:
