Museo Massó (Bueu – Pontevedra) Radio Galicia | News

He Massó Museum It has its origin in the interest that the brothers had in collecting Jose Maria and Gaspar Massó that from the beginning of the 20th century they were creating what is considered today unique for quality and quantity. This Catalan family had settled in the Pontevedra town of Bueu in the early years of the 19th century to create a company linked to fishing, initially salting and later canning.

Officially the museum opens its doors on November 26, 1932, but the crisis of the canning company in the 90’s with its closure leaves the continuity of the museum in a situation of uncertainty. In 1993, the Xunta de Galicia reached an agreement with the family and acquired the collection and part of the old factory building. Massó which will not prevent it from closing its doors for almost a decade, during which a small rehabilitation is carried out. In July 2002 it reopened.

The permanent exhibition allows to know the biography of the family Massó, the history of the conquest of the sea and the evolution in the exploitation of marine resources. In this sense, the industrial heritage of canned food is outstanding, which spans from the second century to the present day and includes a unique collection in Spain as far as whale hunting and transformation is concerned.
