Museo de Arte de Ponce among finalists for the National Medal for Museums and Libraries | Stage

The Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) announced today that the Ponce Museum of Art is among the 30 finalists for the 2021 National Medal for Museums and Libraries in the United States.

The Museo de Arte de Ponce is the only organization in Puerto Rico that was selected as a finalist for this award.

The IMLS National Medal is the highest honor in the US awarded to museums and libraries that demonstrate significant impact in their communities.

For more than 25 years, the award has honored institutions that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities.

“The Museo de Arte de Ponce has the honor of having been nominated for the IMLS 2021 National Museum and Library Medal. For more than six decades our institution has developed cultural and educational immersion programs in order to raise the quality of life of women. communities it serves. In recent years, after the devastating impact of natural disasters such as Hurricane María, the 2019 earthquake and currently the Covid-19 pandemic, the Museum has managed to adapt quickly to provide support to the most vulnerable sectors of our society. Initiatives such as ‘ConectARTE’ and ‘The museum goes out to the streets’, among others, have allowed us to serve our community even in adverse circumstances for all ”, reported Alejandra Peña Gutiérrez, executive director of the Museo de Arte de Ponce.

Meanwhile, Crosby Kemper, director of the IMLS, commented that “the reactivation and reinstitution of the National Medals by IMLS is another sign of recovery and renewal in these difficult and at the same time hopeful times for the nation. We are celebrating not only the continued excellence of the best of our museums and libraries, but also their extraordinary efforts through the pandemic, recession, racial justice protests, and national divisions, to serve, heal, and unite our communities. .
