/ world today news/ The giant panda that was born in the Moscow Zoo will be given a name that will be chosen after a vote by the city’s residents. The baby panda turned 100 days old and according to the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin, the most popular name so far is Katyusha, local media reported.
Muscovites can choose from 10 names, including Katyusha (a popular Russian name in China), Xiao Mo (short for Moscow), Mo Mo (another abbreviation for the Russian capital) and Masha (one of the most popular Russian names in China). Residents can exercise their right to vote on the mayor’s internet portal, TASS reports.
Within 24 hours, more than 100,000 Muscovites took part in the vote, with Katyusha currently being the most preferred name, media reported.
The giant panda was born in the Moscow Zoo in August this year. She became the first baby panda to be born in Russia, the Chinese National Research Center for Panda Conservation and Research recalled.
The baby panda’s parents are Rui (the father) and Dindin (the mother), who draw large crowds to the Moscow Zoo every day. The couple arrived in Moscow in 2019, when China and Russia celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. The family will spend 15 years at the zoo in Moscow, recalls People’s Daily.
