Kazakh tennis player Yelena Rybakina beat Latvian Yelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season in Melbourne.
Rybakina was seeded at the tournament under the 22nd number, Ostapenko – under the 17th. Previously, they met twice – last year in the semifinals of the WTA tournament in the UK and in 2020 in the quarterfinals of the Linz WTA. In both matches, the Latvian won.
In the remaining quarterfinals, Jessica Pegula (USA, third in the WTA ranking) will play with Victoria Azarenka (Belarus, 24), Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic, 30) – with Magda Lynette (Poland), Arina Sobolenko (Belarus, 5) – with Belinda Bencic ( Switzerland, 10).
Rybakina was born in Moscow, and in 2018 received Kazakh citizenship. Last year, she won Wimbledon, becoming the first Kazakhstani to win a Grand Slam in singles. In the 1/8 finals, she defeated the leader of the world ranking, the Polish Iga Swiatek with a score of 6:4, 6:4.
