NEW JERSEY – Six governors of the northeastern United States held an “emergency summit” on COVID-19 this weekend as several states report record cases of COVID-19 and the additional restrictions feel almost certain in an effort. for stopping the spread throughout the region.
New Jersey and Pennsylvania, two of the six summit states, reported new record totals of cases on Saturday, higher than any single-day number counted at the first peak of the pandemic in the spring.
New Jersey broke its record for the spring on Saturday when Gov. Phil Murphy announced 4,395 new cases of COVID-19. The state broke that new record again just one day later, on Sunday, with 4,540 cases.
Currently, the number of daily tests performed in New Jersey is three times the volume performed in the spring. State data also shows 2,000 people were hospitalized in the state on Friday, less than a third of the state record at the end of April.
“A second wave of COVID-19 is here,” Murphy tweeted on Sunday, reiterating his calls for caution during the upcoming holiday season.
