Murder trial against ex-military from Gambia begins – dpa

Vvomiting against humanity, murder and attempted murder – these are the acts that the federal prosecutor accuses an ex-military man from Gambia. From this Monday (9:00 a.m.) the man has to answer to the Higher Regional Court (OLG) in Celle. The prosecution is convinced that he was a member of a notorious special unit of the Gambian armed forces and carried out illegal kill orders. Specifically, he is said to have driven accomplices to the crime scenes. The accused was arrested in Hanover in March 2021 and has been in custody since then.

At the end of 2003, a lawyer survived several shots, seriously injured. A year later, a journalist critical of the government was killed, and probably in 2006, members of the unit known as the “Junglers” shot and killed a suspected opponent of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh.

Jammeh had ruled dictatorially as head of state in the small West African country for 22 years. The ex-president, who went into exile in Equatorial Guinea after being voted out in early 2017, has been accused of numerous human rights violations. According to victim lawyer Reed Brody, the trial in Celle is the first international trial against an officer of the Jammeh regime. If convicted, the man faces life imprisonment.
